Why have we chosen ARES as the name for our project? It is the acronym for “analysing anti-feminist resistances.” The word resistance is frequently linked to positive things; for example, the French resistance to the Nazi occupation during the Second World War. But in our project, we study resistances to equality, including violence against women, something negative and plural, since these resistances come from different places and are of different natures and dimensions.
To underline the negative of these resistances we have chosen the name of Ares, who, in addition, was the god of war in Greek mythology. Unlike the clever Athena, who also ran the affairs of war, she was an angry and aggressive god, representing brutality, violence, and the horrors of battle.
We have found this name appropriate to talk about violence against women on digital platforms and content.
